HOW TO BE A MORE CARING PERSON

Many of us have a caring side, but we don't always get to show it. This could be because we're too caught up in our own selfish passions, or we might hide our caring side in fear of patronizing others.

However, we should never squash the compassionate side of our being. We can do a lot of good in the world if we do something to care for others. So if you have the capacity to reach out a caring hand, these are some of the ways in which you can do it.

Start with the people around you

Be it a family member, friend, neighbor, or work colleague, reach out to them when you know they need support. A kind word, a listening ear, and a hug (if you know the person well) can do much to make them feel cared for. Offer practical support too if you are able, or help them find the support they need if they need more help than you can give them.

Be a kind stranger

You don't need to know a person when sharing your caring side. Whenever you see an opportunity to help somebody, even if it's in support of a stranger, do so if you feel it appropriate. It could be an elderly person struggling to carry their shopping. It might be somebody without the correct change at the supermarket checkout. Or it could be somebody struggling to find their way from A to B. Or anybody else besides. Of course, you do need to be careful - you don't want to put yourself in harm's way - but if you feel as if your help would be appreciated, step in and do something.

Look for a caring career

If your job is unfulfilling, it might be because you aren't making a difference in the world. Especially if you are somebody who bursts with compassion, you might want to look for a career change. There are all kinds of caring jobs in the world, including social work, teaching, youth work, and counseling. You could start your own business too, with the mindset of caring for the wellbeing of others. Consider our article on starting a wellness business, for example. So, consider the people you would like to care for, and research ways to move into your new career, looking online for counselling courses and the like to help you progress.

Support the charities you care about

Be it in aid of homeless people, sick animals, or orphaned children (or something else besides), do what you can to support the charities that stir something within you. You could give your time, perhaps by helping out at a local homeless shelter or animal hospital. Or you could donate money when you're able. You might also raise funds for the charities you care about. By doing something to help, you will make a difference, so think about the causes you're passionate about and do something to help.

The world needs more caring people in it, so don't hide this side of your character. Be present and alert to the needs of others, and be that person who does something rather than nothing in the aid of another. Most people will appreciate your care, and you will feel rewarded by the good works you have done.
