SHARPENING VS GAINING NEW EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS

Everyone is looking to advance through their career to the top positions. For some people it might take a few years to receive a promotion, for others, it may only take a few months. It's not necessarily that one person is lacking more than the others, it's more of a case of skills. Employers are looking to hire talent that shows promise of advancing and improving their current repertoire of skills. In other words, a blank canvas that is ready to accept new paint. If you took on this approach, you will find that your career prospects suddenly open and your options to take on new responsibilities and earn a higher salary, sharply rise. How should you approach this challenge? There are two main paths, sharpening skills where you work now, or gaining totally new skills.

Gaining industry skills

If you would like to stay in your current career but would like new responsibilities that only a promotion would give, speak to your HR department. Human resources are the arm of a business that focuses on employee training and wellbeing. They will have various training programs which run periodically around the year. Signing yourself up for a program will advance not just your skills, but show you want to be placed in a more demanding role. Many modern training programs give you industry skills, which can be used anywhere in your respective industry. If at any point in the future you would like to take a new job at a different company, these skills are able to be transferred over, most of the time. Speaking to your manager or team leader will also boost your name up the ladder of consideration for various programs that would lead to career development within the company.

Taking on a new challenge

Going to a university that offers specific courses that would give you the skills you need to land the role you wish for. However, all universities have their own entrance requirements such as the George Washington University gpa. They recommend you have at least 3.85 and a score on the SAT of at least 1287. To align with their values, they also recommend you join the school band, sports teams and other group activities all around the campus. This particular university values music heavily, thus one way to increase your chances of getting in is to have an interest in this field in your extracurricular activity. However, other universities that offer the types of courses that you would like to study, will need you to demonstrate other aspects of your character that would fit their suitability criteria. With this in mind, you should evaluate whether taking a new course will give you the career prospects you wish for. Many industries would prefer you have a relevant degree under your belt if you want to be considered for a leadership role.
